Why should I be a teacher with Teaching SOS?

We provide an invaluable opportunity to help improve the lives of Thai students and local communities in ways that will have a great impact on the. Teachers and volunteers will gain an enriching experience whilst working and living in Thailand. Our volunteers/teachers will have firsthand exposure to international development during the dynamic and rising ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region.

What school will I teach at?

Our program will match successful applicants with primary and secondary schools in less-developed provinces of Thailand.

Can I teach at a language center?

Yes, however, keep in mind the language centers have unorthodox working hours. The schools are co-educational, either public or private, and enroll students from primary school to high school. The schools administer the Ministry of Education’s curriculum, and are not exclusively language schools.

What grade will I teach?

It depends on each school that you agree on. Mostly, our partner schools need teachers for grades K-12. The grade level(s) each teacher or volunteer is assigned will be determined during the teacher-school matching process.  *Some teachers may teach more than one more grade.

What subject(s) will I teach?

All teachers will teach English. The curriculum includes, listening, speaking, reading, and writing learning objectives. There may be opportunities to teach other subjects, such as math and science, using English as the language of instruction.

What is the typical class size?

A typical class size in Thailand is 20-50 students per class.

How many hours will I teach each week?

Approximately 15 to 25 hours a week.

Do I need to know the Thai Language?

You DO NOT need to know how to speak Thai- the language of instruction will be English. However, you will have the opportunity to learn the language during your time in Thailand, both from lessons and through immersion and conversations with students, friends, and colleagues.

Teachers will be asked to work Monday to Friday 7:0 am to 4:30 pm. It depend on each school policy.

When is the academic year?

The academic year runs from May-March, with a two-week school break in October.

Semester 1: May-September

Semester 2- November-March.

Where will I live?

We will assist you to find a safe, comfortable, and convenient accommodation which is easy for you to travel to school.

How will I get around?

There is ample public transportation, often in the form of inexpensive shared-ride taxis. Mopeds/scooters are a popular means of transportation that much of the population employs.

Please note that if you decide to rent or buy a scooter, a valid driver’s license will be required to drive and may be asked by Thai police whilst driving around

How much is the cost of living?

We estimate daily expenses of approximately 200-300 baht for transportation, meals, groceries, communications, and amenities; monthly expenses would total about 6,000-9,000 baht. As an example of a basic expense, a typical meal would usually cost 20 to 30 baht, and a sit-down dinner at a restaurant may cost 100 baht. (The current exchange rate is approximately 30 baht per U.S. dollar.)

Please note that this is an estimated amount based on the experiences of our teachers. Your monthly cost of living may be lower or higher depending on the individual.

Who will be considered as a teacher?

Individuals that meet these criterion:

  • A bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships and be constructive team player.
  • Have a passion to make a difference.
  • We are looking for creative, energetic, and enthusiastic individuals who can adapt easily to new environments.

Please note the adjustments to a new country, culture, and job can be difficult; and while we provide in-depth support, we expect successful applicants to have grit and resilience.

  • Any kind of teaching experience is not required, however, incredibly desired and helpful for incoming teachers.
  •  Individuals who have experience living and working abroad are highly considered.
