Teaching in Thailand is a dynamic and exciting experience. From the constant long weekends to the adorable kids, Thailand is a fantastic option as you consider places to teach abroad. Here is a list of 5 reasons why I loved teaching in Thailand.
The students – I had one class of 13 5-year-olds. I was with the children for the majority of the school day and of course became attached to each and every one of them. The kids would come into school every day, so desperate to tell me about the cartoon they watched or show me the picture that they drew. They would bring me their favorite snack or sticker pack from 7-11 and would be really concerned when I wouldn’t eat fried bugs. For all of the hours I spent in front of them, sounding out words, they taught me so much more than I think I ever taught them. The patience, understanding and genuine happiness that drove my students throughout each school year was something that made me a better person.
The food – Thai food is AMAZING. I’m not a huge fan of spicy food, but once I learned how to ask for mild spice, my life was forever changed. There is nothing better than sitting at a street stall with your closest friends or colleagues, eating something that looks confusing but tastes awesome!
Smiles on Smiles – Known as the Land of Smiles, Thai culture is hospitable, friendly and warm. With a small bow of the head and wide-toothed grin, you’ll always feel welcome and at home as you move miles away to teach English in Thailand.
Learn a new language – The language spoken in Thailand is Thai, and it uses its own unique script. While this is sometimes difficult to work around, in time you’ll develop good fluency in language, and be able to engage with your neighbours, your students, and new friends you meet.Any language student can tell you that learning a language in a classroom is a lot harder than being immersed in the language everyday for long periods of time, so in no time you’ll be comfortable conversing in Thai, and navigating restaurant menus, bus schedules, or street signs.
Island paradise – Thailand has mile after mile of gorgeous beaches, beautiful tropical rain forest, and stunning mountain vistas to enjoy. Elephant and tiger sanctuaries make for a fun trip. You can take in beautiful scenery just about anywhere: even in Bangkok, the country’s bustling capital, the countryside is never too far away.
